Partners: Your Cisco Live Summary and Takeaways

Cisco Live this week welcomed about 22,000 attendees to Orlando, with an additional 250,000 attendees participating virtually –record participation for this long-running and always-exciting event!

The following is a look at some of the major news announcements, executive presentations and on-the-scene details that made Cisco Live what it was and to which Cisco partners, in particular, should pay attention. Remember that you can continue to access important Cisco Live content through Cisco Live 365, and make sure you check out the index of Cisco Live-related social media content from across the various Cisco teams.

News You Can Use

This year’s Cisco Live featured important news and strategy updates around Cisco’s Open Network Environment (ONE) strategy, and also our data center portfolio.

Earlier in the week, we announced a slew of products and services under the new Cisco Enterprise  Networks Architecture, a portfolio-wide strategy that applies software programmability to ASICs, operating systems, networking functions, and services across the data center, WAN and LAN. We’ll be updating our entire service provider and enterprise networking portfolio to become open and programmable.

These announcements address the campus and branch networking lines, including the release of Cisco’s highest-performing Catalyst switches to date, the Catalyst 6800 Series, and the new Cisco ISR 4451-AX, described as the most significant performance breakthrough with service availability in integrated branch services since the introduction of the Cisco ISR in 2004. Later in the week we focused on new data center architecture and solutions intended to usher in the era of what we’re calling application-centric infrastructure. That includes two key enhancements to Cisco’s Unified Fabric portfolio, dutifully detailed by Berna Devrim on the Data Center and Cloud Blog. Also make sure you check out Padmasree Warrior’s discussion of this paradigm shift on the Platform blog. Among other topics, Padma talks about why the traditional model of networking isn’t sufficient for the cloud, mobile and big data era, and also why SDN — at least as it’s popularly defined — isn’t the answer.

Did you get to meet the Cisco Powered team this week? They were all over Cisco Live, tweeting and posting away. They were also showcasing Cloud and Managed Services partners – 23 in all, from Dimension Data and CDW to Verizon Terremark and Windstream — in the World of Solutions exhibit hall.

Tying It All Together

The social media interaction at Cisco Live can get pretty intense with all those blogs, tweets and Facebook, LinkedIn and Google Plus posts competing for attention. Here at Cisco, we place a premium on social listening, including monitoring conversations and pulling data and metrics from all those interactions. If you were in Orlando, you probably saw and hopefully stopped by our Cisco Social Media Hub on the ground floor of the Orange County Convention Center.

    I have to say, I was extremely displeased with the message that Edzard Overbeek delivered around Cisco services at Cisco Live this week. What I interpreted the message as being is, “The only way to get the full value of Cisco technologies is to have Cisco services deliver it.” As a partner, hearing that message delivered to 20,000+ live prospects and clients, and more than 250,000 virtual prospects and clients was extremely frustrating. I don’t disagree that Cisco’s services is a valuable part of the lifecycle model, but it isn’t the only way for clients to get full value in their investment. I hope that I misinterpreted the message, and that wasn’t what was actually being conveyed.
