Cutting costs is always a priority. And if your customers need to purchase new products, they likely will want to find the best deal. Did you know that one of the best ways they can do that is by purchasing Cisco Certified Refurbished Equipment?

Pre-owned equipment is Cisco hardware that has been fully refurbished to Cisco factory specifications. It’s backed by the same warranty, and has the same maintenance and support options as new Cisco products. And…Cisco Certified Refurbished Equipment can be had at discounts of as much as 30% off new product prices!

But did you know that less than 5% of Cisco channel partners currently take advantage of the availability pre-owned equipment for their customers? I got the chance to chat with Maryann Von Seggern--senior director, pre-owned equipment, Cisco Capital--and she filled me in on why partners should consider Cisco Certified Refurbished Equipment for their customers’ networks, how the equipment is certified, and the financing available to partners for Certified Refurbished Equipment.

Keep reading for my full Q&A with Maryann.

Channels Blog: First off, what exactly is Cisco Certified Refurbished Equipment?

Maryann Von Seggern: Cisco Certified Refurbished Equipment is Cisco hardware that has been fully refurbished to Cisco factory specifications and is backed by the same warranty, maintenance and support options as the equivalent new Cisco product. Much of the functionality of advanced networking equipment is software and firmware driven. Used equipment, when refurbished properly, loaded with up-to date-firmware and software, and operated within the product specifications, can be expected to operate reliably over the duration of the intended product lifespan.

CB: So why should partners consider Certified Refurbished Equipment for their customers’ networks?

MVS: There are multiple reasons, so I’ll break them down piece by piece.

Price: If reduced or frozen budgets are leaving your customers short of the entire Cisco solution they need, Cisco Certified Refurbished Equipment is a cost-effective way for them to obtain the Cisco products they need, within the budget they have. And blending pre-owned gear with new in the same solution reduces the overall cost.

Certified Refurbished Equipment also provides a competitive solution to lowest-cost procurement policies, such as with government and education.

Network Maintenance: Certified Refurbished Equipment provides a reliable source for older generation products that customers need to maintain their networks until upgrade or migration.

Availability: Occasionally high demand or a short project timeline may lead to product not being available within required timeframes.  In those cases, re-manufactured products may be available for immediate shipment.

Network Integrity: The integrity of the network begins with each component. The introduction of uncertified equipment may expose your customers’ networks to business, security and performance risk. Customers purchasing Cisco Certified Refurbished Equipment can be assured of genuine Cisco products with no compromise to performance, quality, support or value.

Environment: Certified Refurbished Equipment provides a tangible green solution that reduces landfill waste and a customers’ impact on the environment.

CB: How exactly is the equipment certified? Can partners assure customers that they can keep a network secure with pre-owned gear?

MVS: All Cisco Certified Pre-Owned Equipment is subjected to a comprehensive set of ISO9001 and 14001 processes during refurbishing. Each unit is inspected, tested, repaired if needed, and tested again. The previous configuration and owner information is then removed and the unit returned to default settings.

After being restored, a fully licensed and current shippable version of the software is installed to help ensure maximum performance and network compatibility. Finally, each unit is thoroughly cleaned, detailed and carefully packaged in a new “Cisco Certified Refurbished Equipment” shipping box.

CB: What about warranties?

MVS: Current and End-of-Sale Cisco Certified Refurbished Equipment carries the same warranty terms and duration as equivalent new products and are eligible for the same Cisco SMARTnet and service contracts options. Warranty duration varies by product.

CB: Tell us about financing—what special deals are available for partners?

MVS: A wide variety of easy and flexible financing programs are offered through Cisco Capital. Right now, Cisco is offering instant savings on pre-owned gear with special offers such as Quick Start and Partner Deal Registration.

The Pre-Owned Equipment Partner Deal Registration promotion provides a significant discount to any Cisco registered Channel Partner located in the United States that actively identifies, develops, and wins new business opportunities using Cisco Certified Refurbished Equipment. This resale promotion incorporates a deal registration component to protect and reward partners’ presales investments, enabling partners to focus on their added value to win opportunities.

Wow…such an elegant and significant contribution to sustainable product life cycle management. As a customer before i already knew Cisco switches had one of the lower or least range power requirement per port, and couple that with equipment re-use i feel quite proud now. And its certified by Cisco too!

  2. No one will sell used because the margins on new is 50%. If a customer checks on pricing for a used product and realizes they are going to pay more than the retail price, where do you think that leaves the reseller? Looking for a new client. That’s where.

  4. Thank you for your comments. As we all know, Cisco Certified Refurbished Equipment must be priced below new equipment in order for it to make business sense. We always take into account Cisco new prices as we initially set our Cisco Refurbished Equipment prices. However, due to Cisco’s dynamic programs and promotions (some of which include pre-owned gear and some of which do not), there are occasionally instances where the pricing differential can get out of balance. In those instances, we encourage you to discuss these deals with us. We will work with you to find a pricing solution that meets your needs.
