Today, Citrix announces XenDesktop 5.5 with the addition of “Personal vDisk” from their recent acquisition of RingCube. To give credit, this story on RingCube broke earlier from folks like:
A group of Australian systems integrators did a great write-up on Aug 3:
Having been a former member of the executive team at RingCube prior to re-joining Cisco’s desktop virtualization group, I’m pleased to see Citrix get aggressive about tackling this problem. And the overarching problem has been that corporate PCs have evolved to become more cumbersome, less productive and less “personal” to work on in recent years.
Now you might ask – is it really important that “Personal Computers (PCs)” remain “Personal”? Well, actually it turns out even in a corporate setting, it makes a huge difference. IT departments can dictate to some degree what employees can and can not use for business but each day we see an explosion of more usage on more personalized devices. As knowledge professionals, these devices often operate as an extension of who we are, what we say, and what we do.
Frank Barry at NETWITSTHINKTANK has published a compelling infographic that visually describes the power of social media to enhance charitable giving.
He describes this as the power of “friends asking friends.” A call out in the graphic notes, “Participants who use online fundraising tools raise six times more money than those who don’t.”
I know this has worked with me -- I feel good when I click on a friend’s Facebook post about a walk they are doing or a cause they support. For just $5 or $10, I can support them and their cause and it’s a win-win-win.
According to the article,
Overall, those who use social media tools at all increased their fundraising by 40% compared to peers. However, fewer than half of fundraisers tap into their social networks or use social media tools when fundraising.
Those are persuasive numbers. The infographic shows a host of tools folks are using to raise money and it includes hosting events and other online tools. That’s where WebEx can help. It is just another tool to add to your arsenal for social fundraising. Read More »

Earlier this year, Cisco was named the market leader in digital signage by Frost and Sullivan. With our broad customer base and large IT & AV partner ecosystem, this places Cisco in a unique position to have insight into emerging digital signage trends and customer needs. Digital signage is more than just a targeted advertising device; it becoming one of many video applications considered in enterprise video strategies and it’s an interactive communications tool to speed information across a large campus and increase collaboration within an organization.
For example, Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) deployed Cisco Digital Signs as part of an emergency preparedness initiative. With over 100 Cisco Digital Signs across multiple campuses and sites, NOVA was able to respond quickly during a campus shooting: they used a customized front-end web interface, accessible from campus safety officials’ mobile devices, to display emergency content to all the screens. In just a few clicks, all screens instantly switched to the emergency messaging.
In the video below, I highlight some of the established signage trends that we are seeing across multiple industries, as well as new use cases for digital signage that continue to add value to customer deployments.
The answer is simple… yes. But you need to decide based on your video conferencing needs.
Maybe sharing isn’t the best name -- think of it more as showing -- meaning the person you are talking to can look at the exact same thing you are looking at on your computer.
It beats emailing a document because they can see you literally point to the item, or make the edit, or surf the website in real time. There are different ways you can share and it can make a difference.
When you watch, you’ll learn when to share an application or your desktop, and when it’s better to upload a presentation or document to your WebEx session. Virtual meeting expert Janine Kurnoff goes behind the scenes and shows you how to present like a pro. You’ll learn how to easily leverage the best features in both methods and keep your viewers more engaged.
There’s just one year to go until the London 2012 Olympic Games. It’s been quite a year and we have had much to celebrate – not least that, at the heart of a world-class event, there’s a world-class network infrastructure helping to make it all happen.
Games test events are underway from a technical perspective and we’re pleased with the way our network is performing. Our marketing activities have scaled to a fully-integrated activation plan and colleagues worldwide are really engaging with our internal programme – check out
Neil Crockett judges final STEMNet challenge
one example here. I am especially proud of our investment in creating the British Innovation Gateway, announced in January.
But a recent highlight for me has been chairing the judging panel for the Cisco STEMNet challenge. UK schools were invited to design a website for Paralympian handcyclist, Rachel Morris. Rachel kindly agreed to help judge the entries, joined by Chris Thompson of Ravensbourne College, the Digital Media Centre of Excellence in East London. We were overwhelmed by the quality of the submissions and by the enthusiasm and engagement the students showed in wanting to support Rachel’s endeavours, which made for quite a few emotional moments among us all.
This week, CNN Money is running a series of articles on Cybercrime and the Cybercrime Economy. They offer a series of interesting tips and strategies to protect your business. As I was reading the articles, it reminded me that we are often asked about the safety of WebEx meetings.
WebEx meetings operate with Cisco Security.
This is a very important part of the WebEx solution. With so many “free” web conferencing solutions available today, it’s easy to fall into a commodity mentality when choosing an online solution. But the reality is, free doesn’t always mean secure.
If you are using video conferencing, chances are you are doing business and sharing information that you would not want someone else to hear (unless that was your intention). This is also true for vendors, contractors and consultants who typically have a legal obligation Read More »

Leaders, like teachers, transform people’s lives. That’s because leadership and teaching both focused on bringing out the brilliance that exists within people. Now you can learn ways to teach more effectively.
Alas, people who teach — in classrooms, meetings, workshops, or any setting where learning happens — sometimes don’t know how to bring out the best in others effectively. They tell people what to do rather than teach them how. The result: they are often disappointed in the outcome.
In this WebEx, applied learning expert Dr. Vicki Halsey will show you how Read More »
Ever wondered who’s on a WebEx? Here’s a look at global activity that’s refreshed every few minutes.
Click in and take a look. You will see the host’s location and how many people are participating in the meeting. Some people are even in a one-person meeting, which I imagine means they are recording content to share with others or post on their website.
WebEx Makes the World a Little Smaller
What I find amazing is how many people are video conferencing from very remote locations -- really shows the power of the Internet and how it allows for collaboration no matter where you are!
If you use WebEx, you can see the power of the WebEx network. If you are hosting a WebEx event or have a recorded WebEx posted that’s public, let us know. Send us a tweet @WebExEvents and we’ll retweet your information to our network.
If you haven’t tried WebEx yet, you can get a free trial and download WebEx mobile free (you need an account if you want to host from a mobile; attending is free).
With high-quality video, trainers are starting to enhance the remote training experience – adding face-to-face and new visual dimensions that weren’t possible previously.
Join our experts, Richard Nantel, Co-CEO of Brandon Hall Group, and Cisco eLearning Specialist Linda Uli, as they review the results of a new market study on how organizations are using video for training.
They will discuss innovation today and how they believe video will evolve. They will walk you through best practices on effectively applying video to your virtual classrooms. Dominic Lau from the USC Distance Education Network will share lessons learned from the Viterbi School of Engineering, as they were early adopters of WebEx high quality video for their online classes.
During this session, you will learn how other companies and universities are using video in their blended learning programs, when to use video so it will enhance, rather than detract from the learning objectives, which training scenarios benefit most from video and how to increase your value as a “video-ready” instructor.

Whether you work at a specialty boutique firm or a large global enterprise, video is having a profound impact on the way we do business in today’s digitally connected world. Nowhere is this more visible than at a global architecture firm like Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF).
Headquartered in New York City with offices in six global locations, KPF exemplifies the workplace of the future—that is, one that allows virtual teams to work together anytime, anywhere. My Cisco co-worker Diane Davidson recently had the pleasure of visiting KPF’s New York office, where she was able to see their collaboration infrastructure firsthand. Not only do they have an environment that allows project teams to work together from any location at anytime, they also have video on every end point—from desktop video phones, laptops, tablets and smart phones to room systems. According to James Brogan, AIA Director, Firmwide Technology, that’s because face-to-face communication is absolutely critical to the firm’s success.

IT leaders today are facing a big challenge. How can they best manage the tremendous amounts of video in the enterprise, both employee-generated video content being shared and downloaded among the workforce and live streamed video traveling across their network?
The answer is Cisco’s new family of video delivery products, announced today, called Cisco’s Enterprise Content Delivery System. Cisco’s ECDS optimizes video delivery across an enterprise’s network, enabling companies to deliver the highest-quality live streamed and on-demand video content to their end users anywhere, on any device.
Imagine being able to significantly minimize the impact video has on the network. In the video below, I introduce ECDS and describe how it makes video easier to manage and deliver; removing the headache of deploying video while preserving the high quality video experience for each end user.
With the introduction of WebEx Mobile and our new high-quality video, we’ve received some great reviews.
