Today, Cisco announced the new release of the Cisco VXI Smart Solution. Part of the announcement is, of course, enhancements in our Borderless Networks architecture to enable our customers to deploy a secure, reliable, and fast virtual desktop infrastructure.

“Rumors of My Death…”
I’m always amazed by how the rumor mill continues to try to kill off people and products. The American author, Mark Twain, once felt compelled to write, “The report of my death was an exaggeration.” and I know how he feels!
It happened to Sir Paul McCartney, when the Beatles were still an active band. It happened to that iconic sports car, the Porsche 911, in the mid-70s. Quick… who remembers the Porsche 928? More importantly, who doubts that the 911 still delivers class-leading performance?

Cloud computing is coming, and we’re seeing businesses migrating to cloud services very quickly – Gartner expects 60% of enterprises will have migrated branch office services to the cloud or virtualized servers by 2015 (Gartner Analyst Review, February 2012). Yet, oddly enough, many businesses have done relatively little to prepare their existing network infrastructure for the inevitable transformation – despite the fact the network remains the critical path between their users and the cloud services they need to get their job done.

There has been recent speculation on Cisco’s WAAS business, but let’s set the record straight: to paraphrase Mark Twain, rumors of WAAS’ demise have been greatly exaggerated. Cisco is fully committed to the WAAS business. We have made some changes in our go-to-market approach, but our engineering teams remain fully engaged and working against our long term roadmap to drive application awareness into the network. To better leverage the capabilities of the teams, Cisco integrated the WAAS teams directly into our access router group, which now allows us to leverage a large set of developers and to focus on our Cloud Intelligent Network architecture, Cloud Connect Solutions and the L4-7 technologies which support the cloud transition.
