Security Research & Operations

Richard Aceves does not claim to know everything about networking security, but his experience at Cisco since 1997 has been instructive:

- Unless you live and breathe it, information security is something most people do not think about until after the proverbial horse has left the barn.

- Hunter S. Thompson was right: “When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.”  There is much weirdness in security, regardless of the colour of your hat.

- Results obtained through well-thought collaboration will always be better than those driven by fear.

Richard has led numerous security functions at Cisco, including the Product Security Incident Response Team (PSIRT).  A strong proponent of ongoing education, he assists Cisco customers from consumers to C-level executives in understanding the constantly changing landscape of security.  Richard recently returned to California after three years in Paris and manages the team responsible for the operation of the Cisco Security Intelligence Operations Portal.

Prior to joining Cisco, Richard spent over thirteen years at Apple where he became a hopeless fanboy.  In his spare time, he enjoys cycling, aviation, French wine, taking his sportbike around twisty Bay Area roads and racetracks, and annoying his neighbours with loud electric guitar.  When he grows up, he’ll be a rock star.  Really.
