In my most recent blog on revenue-generation marketing, we talked about the alignment of sales and marketing. It is a crucial link for a number of reasons, not the least of which is ensuring that sales and marketing are working toward the same ultimate goal.

In that particular instance, I spoke about:

  1. The responsibility of marketing to provide qualified leads to sales
  2. The need for service level agreements (SLA) dictating process for how those leads are handled
  3. Including a timeline for SLAs that illustrate how those leads will be pushed through the process

As we continue the revenue-generation marketing journey here at Cisco, operational implementation was the next step. Today, I want to share with you some of the best practices we’ve discovered during that implementation. Continue reading “Operational Implementation is Crucial for Revenue-Generation Marketing”

Is the combination of cloud computing and mobility a perfect storm of security threats?

Actually, yes. And you should prepare for them as if there is a storm coming. As businesses become increasingly mobile, so does sensitive data. In fact, in a recent survey conducted by ESG,

31% of security professionals say that the biggest risk associated with cloud infrastructure services is, “privacy concerns associated with sensitive and/or regulated data stored and/or processed by a cloud infrastructure provider.”

Data Security Through the CloudDid you know:

16 billion web requests are inspected every day through Cisco Cloud Web Security

93 billion emails are inspected every day by Cisco’s hosted email solution

200,000 IP addresses are evaluated daily

400,000 malware samples are evaluated daily

33 million endpoint files are evaluated every day by FireAMP

28 million network connects are evaluated every day by FireAMP

We all know about the importance of knowing your customer needs, and focusing on the digital journey. But all too often, we overlook the content that customer experiences — and how well it pays off the journey. A few months ago at the Word of Mouth Marketing Association  conference, I shared five steps to tune the customer  journey and the content needed to support it. Here are some lessons learned (and what you can do to get started).

1.  Build out customer personas.

The first step is to bring your customer targets to life. Who are your customers and what do they care about? What are their key go-to sources for web, mobile and social?  The key is to understand the roles these target buyers play and the interplay within the purchase process. At Cisco, we started with three target personas for our Data Center buyers and did a deep dive into careabouts for CEO, BDM and Technical Influencer roles. So last week I attended the mobile industry’s World Cup or Super Bowl, the 2014 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. The GSMA has just reported that more than 85,000 visitors from 201 countries attended the 2014 MWC attended the 4 day event, setting another new record. Every mobile operator, systems integrator, software and hardware vendor that touched the mobile industry was there. People were everywhere and all I can say was wow….

MWC Hot Topics that companies presented were on monetization, virtualization, and supersizing network components. With all of the hundreds of customers that I had the chance to speak with, virtualization and orchestration were really key areas for them. They came into our booth to speak with us, often confused as to them it seemed every vendor in attendance spoke about virtualization or orchestration, which often led operators to think that any vendor can do it. As many operators that have been evaluating this space for a while have found is that animated slides are easy to do but orchestrating and virtualizing a network is not. If you take a product that was just and “okay product”, then virtualize it, then you have a “virtualized okay product” and sometimes still tied to proprietary hardware.

According to Akshay Sharma, research director at Gartner, the Network Function Virtualization (NFV) market is Continue reading “Cisco Quantum Virtualized Packet Core: Automated and Orchestrated”

Did you watch the Academy Awards this week? It sure would been great to get my mug in Ellen’s selfie shot. I could have been Bradley right? ..and a slice of pizza would have been great with Julia, Harrison, and “Marty”. Certainly this year’s Oscars was the best one in years.

As we prepare to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8, I am reflecting on so many factors that led to where I am today. My mother grew up in India when the path for most women was not one of higher education and a professional life. Yet, with the support of her family, she pursued an advanced degree and became an internationally acclaimed scientist. At a time when arranged marriages were the standard, she met my father and they wed in a non-traditional “love marriage.” With her quiet strength, she was a pioneer, and her experience and outlook helped shape who I am and the path I have taken.

I, too, had the support of my family to pursue dreams of a college degree and professional career, and to be a wife and mother. But many girls and women are not afforded these opportunities, a lack of access which leads to millions trapped in a cycle of poverty, abuse, and poor health—an inherent inequality—where 66 million girls around the world are not in school, 150 million girls are victims of sexual violence each year, and the number 1 cause of death for girls ages 15 to19 is childbirth.

January 2014 started with a bang, with one in every 191 web requests resulting in a web malware encounter. The Cisco Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT) observed this same trend, witnessing a 200% increase in web malware encounters experienced by Cisco employees for the month. Overall, January 1, 25, and 26 were the highest risk days for encountering web delivered malware. In the chart below, the lower the number, the higher the risk of encounters. Still, with a median encounter rate of 1:375 requests, every day of January 2014 represented significant risk for web browsing.
