In February we announced the Evolved Services Platform (ESP) as part of our Service Provider Cisco Open Networking Environment.  The ESP consists of a service broker (a storefront for SP applications), a catalog of virtual functions (components of the offerings) and an orchestration engine, which is essentially the factory the produces the applications themselves.

One of the key functions of ESP’s orchestration engine is to automate, in real time,  the operations of today’s complex multivendor physical and virtual infrastructure. This week we announced the WAN Automation Engine (WAE), which helps deliver this function for the wide area networks of our carrier operators, and enables them to deliver positive business outcomes for their end customers. Using WAE’s sophisticated predictive analytics and path computation, operators can now rapidly create new revenue generating services such as bandwidth calendaring for their end customers; this is not possible in many of their present modes of operation.

Those responsible for the “bottom line” in service providers will Continue reading “What’s New With Cisco’s Evolved Services Platform (ESP)? A Peek Inside the Service Provider’s Software …”

This question is inspired by the fact that the “count” parameter to MPI_SEND and MPI_RECV (and friends) is an “int” in C, which is typically a signed 4-byte integer, meaning that its largest positive value is 231, or about 2 billion.

However, this is the wrong question.

The right question is: can MPI send and receive messages with more than 2 billion elements?

As spring turns to summer, just 6 months from when Cisco announced its vision of Application Centric Infrastructure, the momentum has started to pick up on all fronts – solution availability, technology integration with partners, channel awareness and most importantly strong customer traction. It is worthwhile to look at the trajectory thus far –

  • Nexus 9000 shipping with strong customer traction, awards and records
  • 70+ active ACI trials with customers and channel partners
  • ACI ecosystem – 33 ecosystem partners leveraging the open approach and the policy model
  • 1000+ customers in pipeline
  • 175+ customers across major SPs, Enterprise and Commercial with several production deployments

With the APIC ready to ship this summer and become generally available, it is very exciting to see the positive feedback coming in especially from customers and partners that are deploying the Nexus 9000 as also those participating in the ACI trials with the Application Policy Infrastructure Controller (APIC).

Hear directly from our major partners in this short video montage

New Innovations

Today we continued the momentum with new “ACI-ready” Nexus 9300 Top of Rack switches (9336PQ and 9396TX) both of which can ease into traditional 3-Tier deployments or ACI deployments moving forward. A new line card was also made available for the Nexus 9500 to function as an ACI ready spine. In addition, there were several other innovations across the Nexus portfolio, including a new Nexus 6004X switch,  VXLAN support made available across the entire portfolio as well as enhanced programmability and SDN/automation capabilities on the Nexus 7000 series switches.

For students enrolled in Cisco Networking Academy courses, Networking Academy NetRiders Competitions are an amazing way to gain valuable hands-on experience, test their skills under pressure, and expand their network of professional connections. Most of all, winning NetRiders helps students stand out in the job market, as Jesús Israel Nava of Mexico and Csilla Bessenyei of Hungary found out.

Bob_SchoenherrBob Schoenherr is a designer, content developer, and technical lead for the competitions. “Apart from the hands-on practical experience, the competitive environment allows participants to go head to head against students from all over the world,” he says. “NetRiders and other skills competitions give students exposure for internships and career opportunities and offer contestants development growth potential in networking and IT skills that prove beneficial.”

Bob offers a bit of advice for students planning to participate. He recommends that students learn the materials, as opposed to memorizing the material: “The best way to learn concepts is to create scenarios to be solved and then solve them.”

Watch Bob’s video below for more insights on the benefits of participating in NetRiders.

We are very excited to announce the beginning of our new blog series on public safety. This series will include a number of posts that examine the intersection of technology and public safety as well as identify solutions to promote greater awareness and action.

Having worked in this field for over 15 years, I am especially enthusiastic about sharing my thoughts and starting a conversation on these issues. Before leading the Cisco’s Connected Justice Solution and Public Safety Business Development team, I was a Chief of Police and dealt with all of the same issues that agencies are dealing with today.  Throughout my career, I have been passionate about improving the criminal justice system as well as government and public safety. And to this end, I have worked to streamline processes, lower costs, and increase efficiencies through the use of technology while making first responders safer. Ooh! That gal’s pulling out…Wait, Wait! If I can just get over 2 lanes…Ahhh, quit yer honking! NO WAY!!! That hotshot in the red convertible just stole my spot! Now I have to go around the block again…!

You know you’ve been through this and you’ve probably also been behind someone trying to get across 2 lanes to capture a spot and causing mayhem. It’s estimated that 30% of all traffic congestion in urban areas is caused by drivers circling and struggling to find a parking spot. With cities growing at an estimated 10,000 people per hour, the situation isn’t going to get any better unless we make some changes.

Solving the parking madness

Cities–perhaps yours–can now implement a new Internet of Everything solution — Cisco Smart+Connected City Parking — to help alleviate many of their parking (and resulting traffic) headaches. The solution not only serves spot-seeking drivers, but can also support traffic enforcement officers to locate violations more easily, generate more revenue from citations, and reduce vandalism and other safety issues via video surveillance. Finally, the solution provides date to city operations centers to improve planning and development decisions. Continue reading “Parking Gets IoE Smart”
