VRT / TRACThis post is co-authored by Andrew Tsonchev, Jaeson Schultz, Alex Chiu, Seth Hanford, Craig Williams, Steven Poulson, and Joel Esler. Special thanks to co-author Brandon Stultz for the exploit reverse engineering.

Silverlight exploits are the drive-by flavor of the month. Exploit Kit (EK) owners are adding Silverlight to their update releases, and since April 23rd we have observed substantial traffic (often from Malvertising) being driven to Angler instances partially using Silverlight exploits. In fact in this particular Angler campaign, the attack is more specifically targeted at Flash and Silverlight vulnerabilities and though Java is available and an included reference in the original attack landing pages, it’s never triggered.

HTTP requests for a specific Angler Exploit Kit campaign
Exploit Content Type
Angler exploit content types delivered to victims, application/x-gzip (Java) is notably absent

Organizations are rethinking their data centers and nothing is off limits for discussion – everything from infrastructure to software to processes, and even more fundamentally, the very ways in which a data center serves the business. One element that is empowering this phenomenal shift is IT automation. It is vital. No automation, no effective IT. The more sluggish IT is, the more costly it is to the business. Organizations know that, and they want to automate IT processes at all levels to increase effectiveness, time-to-market, and innovation so that they can perform well and compete effectively.  IT automation has proven itself, and now it is ready for its closeup.

This week at CiscoLive in San Francisco, you will see just how far automation is reaching into organizations. No longer content to provision virtual machines through a VM dispenser, companies are looking for ways to automate the entire solution stack: applications down through the infrastructure that supports them. Catalyst 3850 FiberOver a year ago, Cisco launched its first flagship Catalyst 3850 series switches at Cisco Live London. With its integrated wireless LAN controller functionality and the innovative UADP ASIC, the Catalyst 3850 switches provide a converged wired and wireless platform that is the heart of “One Network” in the Cisco Unified Access “One Policy. One Management. One Network” approach.

Today, we are excited to announce an addition to the Cisco Catalyst 3850 series switch family: the new Catalyst 3850 1G SFP fiber switch models. They are new SKUs in the Catalyst 3850 switch family and they help further expand the Cisco Unified Access solution. I’ll explain how later, but first let me help you get familiar with this new product offering.

The new Catalyst 3850 SFP fiber switch models have nearly everything identical with their sibling access switches in the Catalyst 3850 switch family: Continue reading “Announcing: New Catalyst 3850 SFP Fiber Switch Models Expand Cisco Unified Access”

Billboard[2]Cisco Live kicked off this morning with more than 20,000 attendees storming the streets of San Francisco and the Moscone Convention Center. I am so excited to be hosting Cisco Live again this year – especially because it’s the 25th Anniversary of this event, and this year we’re back in the city that inspired our company’s name and logo.

As attendees are getting settled in for an action-packed week, I want to highlight two dynamic experiences not to be missed at this year’s conference:  our  Internet of Everything (IoE) Machine – a 20-by-20 foot interactive installation – and five Connected City interactive bus shelters. Both experiences simulate a journey through a connected city, showing how Cisco technology helps cities run like clockwork by connecting people, process, data and things.

Every day, in every city, an event takes place.  It could be a baseball game, a music concert or even an innovative conference like Cisco Live. No matter what it is, this event puts pressure on the host city around traffic, energy usage, etc.   But the Internet of Everything takes the stress off cities by making airports, roads, power grids, recycling cans, parking lots – you name it – all smarter so that events can go off without a hitch.

Cisco Live in San Francisco (next week!) offers a host of learning opportunities if you are part of a Service Provider, or a large Enterprise that offers services to internal groups. Let my blog be your guide to help you chart out all the different sessions that Cisco has to offer during the week, with a specific focus on the software capabilities of the routing and switching platforms in 4 key areas – IPv6, SDN, MPLS Transport & Ethernet Services, and IP Routing.

First up, IPv6! The exhaustion of IPv4 is not the only driving force for IPv6 adoption. Service Provider IPv6 deployments are rapidly ramping up with a majority of SPs looking towards IPv6. Join us for a recap on ‘IPv6 – From Intro to Intermediate’ (Session ID: BRKRST-2116) or join us to hear about our experiences in ‘Service Provider IPv6 Deployment’ (Session ID: BRKSPG-3300) where our IPv6 gurus highlight deployment best practices and real-world challenges. Security is key in IPv6 – and that’s the focus of ‘IPv6 Security Threats & Mitigations’ (Session ID: BRKSEC-2003). And since we are dealing with the networking, don’t worry, we got you covered with a Troubleshooting IPv6 session (Session ID: BRKRST-2304). See the full list of learning opportunities at here.

Next up, is SDN – Software Defined Networking. The industry’s latest Continue reading “Hitchhiker’s Guide for Service Providers at Cisco Live, San Francisco”

It has been a great year for Data Virtualization at Cisco Live!   Milan, Melbourne, and Toronto were fantastic opportunities to introduce Data Virtualization to Cisco customer and partner audiences.  And we have saved the best for last with multiple activities at Cisco Live! San Francisco.

We kick things off on Monday May 18 with a by-invitation program for Cisco Data Virtualization customers and prospects.  We start the day at 3:00 with a special pass to John Chambers’ keynote address.  This is followed by a reception, data virtualization demo and tour in the World of Solutions hall.  And we close the evening with a dinner at one of San Francisco’s finest restaurants. Participants in this program return on Wednesday night for a special performance by Lenny Kravitz.   If you would like to join us, please contact Paul Torrento at ptorrent@cisco.com.

For those of you attending the full event, Data Virtualization is also featured in two sessions both entitled, Driving Business Outcomes for Big Data Environment.  I will lead a quick summary session on Thursday at 11:15am, with Jim Green providing a deeper-dive technical session from 11:30-12:30 that day.   In these sessions we will address one of the major issues organizations are facing as a consequence of exponential data growth – that is the huge expenses required to upgrade capacity in their enterprise data warehouses. To avoid this spend, customers are looking for lower cost alternatives such as offloading infrequently used data to Hadoop.  In these sessions you will find out about Cisco’s complete solution with Unified Computing System hardware and Data Virtualization software and Services methodology.

Please also stop by the Data Virtualization booth in the Cisco Services pavilion where we can chat about your business outcome objectives and how data virtualization can help.

And if you can’t make it to Cisco Live! San Francisco, then no worries.  Just check out the recording of my colleague Peter Tran’s session, Utilizing Data Virtualization to Create More Business Agility and Better Decision-Making, from Cisco Live! Milan.  It’s a great crash course intro to data virtualization.
