Manufacturing Innovation Begins with a Converged Network

Many manufacturers are gathered at the ARC World Industry Forum in Orlando this week discussing new technologies, best practices and emerging standards in manufacturing.  They’re talking about how to drive innovation with real-time advanced analytics, increase equipment utilization, implement energy-savings and sustainability strategies, collaborate amongst supply chain expertise with machine-level context and awareness, and enable mobile computing, cyber security and safety. One top of mind theme is The Internet of Things and its positive impact on all of these business goals.  But before manufacturers can capitalize on the Internet of Things, they will need a standards-based, converged, intelligent IP networking platform.

Standards-based IP networks drive operational efficiency and increase asset utilization to create greater profitability. An IP-based network can also streamline the connection of factory floor systems to private clouds, where manufacturing data is more secure and can be analyzed for production quality and product volumes based on real-time information.  This real-time data analysis can be flexibly accessed from multiple devices.

IT OT imageTo ease implementing a converged network, Cisco is introducing the Cisco Industrial Smart Solution, a Cisco end-to-end network architecture that leverages standard, unmodified Ethernet while offering greater security and management efficiencies, enabling innovations across the manufacturing value chain.

The Cisco Industrial Smart Solution brings together operation technology (OT) and information technology (IT) to create a flexible and scalable, standards-based IP network.   The smart solution is an expansion of the Converged Plant wide Ethernet (CPwE) architecture, co-developed by Cisco and Rockwell Automation, and is successfully deployed in many plant floor environments.

“Are assessments the Holy Grail in education or are they the Alchemist’s Stone?” This was the sentence used by Andreas Schleicher, Deputy Director for Education and Special Advisor on Education Policy to the Secretary-General, OECD to kick-off the workshop on the Assessment and Teaching of 21st Century Skills (ATC21S™) last week at the Education World Forum in London.

The workshop was a be a very insightful and dynamic session superbly led by Andreas, and considerably sparked by the active participation of five distinguished panellists as well as several EWF delegates who engaged in a very thought provoking debate about the importance of 21st Century skills, and the role assessments have in helping us understand their real magnitude.

We had some sneak peeks at CiscoLive in London but as you probably know by now, this stuff was just formally announced last week.  Several demos worth looking at give you the foundation for what is important. Shashi Kiran is leading this effort and you can always count on a good quote:

Taking the Next Step in Business Collaboration

When I was in London recently for Cisco Live, I got a lot of questions about how organizations can drive the most value out of collaboration. As expectations for seamless collaboration between devices and applications increase, I can practically see light bulbs appear over many customers’ heads as we talk about how collaboration technologies can transform a business and drive tremendous value.

Many of the conversations I have with customers surround how to best integrate collaboration technologies into business process and other applications to drive the highest value. Many customers are uncertain about how to move forward with taking a business and technology architecture approach to accelerate and simplify business processes.

There are a couple of ways to think about this. The first deals with integrating your collaborative processes into your business process, what we call Collaboration Enabled Business Transformation (CEBT). The second deals with integrating your collaborative capabilities and apps so they work together. This is particularly important since most companies have multi-vendor environments for voice and video, hardware and software, and desktop and network. It is an understatement to say that interoperability is critical with collaboration tools so users have a seamless experience when using them to communicate, do business, and maximize results.
