Whether you’re a small or large organization, your employees are no doubt your most valuable assets. During my career, I’ve seen just how critical it is to unlock the full potential of each person to achieve great things. Today’s unique challenge lies in facilitating effective collaboration amongst a globally distributed workforce with the Internet at the center of everything.
I recently took the stage at Cisco Live! London where I talked about a new class of Internet-raised employees, their requirements for the next-gen workspace, and what Cisco is doing to facilitate this new way of working.
For starters, employees’ expectations today far exceed those of the past when it comes to communications. I can’t even imagine how my 7-year old daughter’s generation will be when they enter the workforce. Influenced by their consumer experiences, employees now desire (and need) much more than the corporate issued laptop: They want access to the devices—smartphones, tablets—and platforms of their choosing. IT departments now must figure out how to provide integrated collaboration experiences from any device and location. I’ve dedicated the past few years to finding a way for people to collaborate in a secure and scalable way while meeting these new expectations.

When it comes to the adoption of new technology such as 802.11ac, the industry becomes a farmer’s almanac of predictions when it comes to when and what devices and products will announce 802.11ac support. Aside from Cisco, who boldly announced support for 802.11ac on the 3600 Access Point for the enterprise, there have been a number of consumer devices such as home routers, bridges, a selection of USB clients and a single gaming oriented laptop that are offering support for the new 802.11ac specification.
With HTC’s announcement of 802.11ac support for their HTC One smartphone, we would expect others to follow suit in the near future, setting the stage for the first series of devices to bring integrated 802.11ac to market sometime in CY13. As these device become available you can expect them to be connecting to your corporate networks as BYOD devices for corporate use. With the devices come the expectations where your end-users are going to be looking for that extra bump in network performance promised by the 802.11ac standard.

What’s new and exciting with EIGRP (Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol)? Actually, lots… First a bit a background on EIGRP.
EIGRP is an advanced distance vector routing protocol used extensively by enterprise customers. It is very popular because it is simple to deploy and support. Some major attributes are:
- EIGRP does not mandate many network design requirements and is therefore perceived as “forgiving” and “flexible”. For example, EIGRP does not require support for multiple routing sub-domains or Areas.
- While route summarization is a recommended best practice to minimize route table size, it is optional with EIGRP.
- EIGRP can scale to support thousands of routers in a Hub and Spoke configuration. The Hub and Spoke design is especially popular in WAN networks.

While EIGRP has a large customer following, some customers have hesitated because of concerns of EIGRP being “proprietary”, which would prevent them from multi-vendor network support. In some cases this has caused customers to design their networks to limit usage of EIGRP, even though they would like to deploy it ubiquitously. One result has been non-optimal network design and traffic flow, resulting from multiple IGP (Interior Gateway Protocol) redistribution points.
