Cisco continues its tradition of performance and price/performance leadership with the announcement of a world-record TPC-H benchmark with the SAP Sybase IQ database on the Cisco Unified Computing System (Cisco UCS™) platform. On October 31st 2013, Cisco published the best single-system x86 performance and price/performance at 3000 GB on the TPC-H benchmark. Cisco UCS C420 M3 Rack Server achieved 230,119.9 QphH@3000GB on the TPC-H benchmark with the SAP Sybase IQ database.

As tested, the benchmark configuration consisted of a Cisco UCS C420 M3 Rack Server with 1 TB of memory and four 2.7-GHz Intel Xeon E5-4650 processors with 20 MB of cache space. The system ran SAP Sybase IQ Version 16 Single Application Server Edition (SASE) and Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server Release 6.4. Check out the Performance Brief for additional information on the benchmark configuration. The detailed official benchmark disclosure report is available at the TPC Website .

Some of the key highlights of Cisco’s TPC-H Benchmark results are:

  • Cisco UCS C420 M3 Rack Server achieved 230,119.9 QphH@3000GB on the TPC-H benchmark with the SAP Sybase IQ database. This is the best performance result of any single-system x 86 configurations.
  • Cisco UCS C420 M3 Rack Server demonstrated a price/performance ratio of US$1.29 per QphH@3000GB, delivering the best single-system price/performance at 3000GB. This result also illustrates the power of Cisco UCS C420 M3 Rack Servers to deliver industry-leading performance at significantly lower cost of ownership.
  • Cisco’s result also demonstrates 42 percent better performance at 48% less price-performance than the HP DL980 G7 server.
Cisco UCS C420 M3 Server 230,119 QphH@3000GB 1.29 USD per QphH@3000GB Availability Date 12/30/13
HP ProLiant DL980 G7 162,601 QphH@3000GB 2.68 USD per QphH@3000GB Availability Date 10/13/10

It’s hard to believe another calendar year is coming to an end less than 2 months. I’m amazed at the pace of which digital and social media continue to evolve and get excited when I think of what 2014 might bring in the way of further surprises.

As we continue to plan for the coming year and look for ways to continue growing the Cisco Social Media Training and Enablement program, I’ve been researching various 2014 digital and social media trends. From the “Top 7 Social Media Marketing Trends That will Dominate 2014” (from @Forbes) to the “6 Social Media Trends That will Impact You in 2014” (from @B2Community), there is a lot of speculation to weed through. In the last MSE blog, Reddy Babu talked about the new Location Aware Guest Captive Portal powered by the Mobility Services Engine (MSE). The MSE was first introduced to provide location based information as a core service to the network, but has since built out a suite of location-based services that take the location-based data from the wireless network to the next level. These services are collectively known as the Cisco Connected Mobile Experiences (CMX) solution. As you read in Dr. Brendan O’Brien’s blog last week, we have been introducing more and more features to the CMX solution.

Today I will expand on one of these new features offered by the Connected Mobile Experiences solution: Browser Engage – which is our new network based location and context aware orchestration platform.

Browser Engage allows organizations to customize the web browsing experience for mobile users in their venue by offering various context-aware value added services. These services, such as indoor navigation and search, are available to the mobile user throughout their mobile web browsing experience. Browser Engage also helps organizations setup their content and serve them to the users based on device location. For example, an organization can deliver coupons or deals to mobile users based on their location within the venue—making the offerings much more relevant to the mobile end user.  Imagine yourself in a mall and a deal shows up on your phone right around lunchtime that is valid at a food court right around the corner.

So, how does it work? Continue reading “Create Mobile Web Campaigns with CMX Browser Engage”

“On the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour in 1918, a cessation of hostilities was honored and WWI came to its unofficial end. Veterans Day (then known as Armistice Day) began as a commemoration to acknowledge the heroism of those who died and to show gratitude for the WW1 victory. Over time, it evolved into an opportunity for Americans to show thanks to all of those who have served our nation in one of the armed forces, and to perpetuate peace and understanding amongst nations.”

Today, as we all honor our veterans past and present, our own Pat Finn has posted a wonderful blog post highlighting some of our programs and activities that help us serve those who serve.

“All of this is to say that we greatly appreciate and are committed to our nation’s veterans, who have so bravely demonstrated their commitment to America.

From all of us, thank you for your service and your sacrifices.”

The Flag flies because of each Soldier’s last breath blowing past.”

freedom has a taste that the protected will never know.”

but because he loves what is behind him.”

As some of you know, my holiday season begins with the Marine’s Birthday and Veterans Day.  The holiday season has always been a time for family and gratitude.  I always find it fitting that these two days to honor our heroes are in the same month as Thanksgiving.  So it is with tremendous honor and gratitude that I wish our Marines a Happy Birthday and our Veterans, past and present, a Happy Veterans Day. It’s Veterans Day, and Cisco is proud to support veterans and their families in many ways. For one, we look for opportunities to hire veterans at Cisco: Courtney Beard is just one our most recent hires.

We also train veterans and military personnel for future careers in information and communications technology (ICT) through the Cisco Networking Academy program. More than 41,000 people have participated in Networking Academy courses on military base locations since 1997. And through tuition assistance and the GI Bill, veterans can enroll in Networking Academy courses offered at accredited community colleges and post-secondary institutions. Matt Heffler is one of many veterans who have found a second career thanks to Networking Academy.

Cisco will host a live webcast on Wedn November 13, 2013 to discuss BYOD, mobility, security and how Cisco access switching address these customer needs. If you are reading this blog, there is a good chance that your work is somehow related to these critical areas. To test how widely BYOD, mobility and security impact IT professionals, I’ve used an unscientific way to check it out on several popular online IT web sites. I want to see if they consider at least one of these areas to be their main focus.  Here’s what I’ve found – many of them (although not every single one) are devoted to at least one area. Cisco WebinarsThe 2013 Cisco IT Impact Survey found that 40% of IT professionals stated that moving their applications to the Cloud as one of their key IT challenges over the past 12 months with 50% of respondents highlighting security data protection and guaranteeing the reliability of applications in the cloud (SLA’s) as the main reasons.

Talking with our Enterprise customers, it is clear that there has been significant gap in the solutions that provide enterprise-class secure connectivity from users and branches to public cloud providers like Amazon Web Services (AWS). As a result, IT departments have not been able to easily connect their private networks into AWS with the consistent security and policy management that they are familiar with – that is until now.

To help customers combat these challenges and accelerate their migration to cloud, I am proud to announce the availability of Cisco’s very first virtualized product now available on Amazon Web Services (AWS): Cisco Cloud Services Router (CSR) 1000V.
