The ongoing trend towards consolidating branch infrastructure started with consolidating services like firewall and VPN into your branch router. Next came server consolidation and virtualization using modules like the UCS E-Series for the ISR G2.  All bring the benefits of lowering total cost of ownership, maintenance costs and reducing network complexity in the branch.

One of the great things about working for Cisco is that we get to see the full spectrum of customer requirements. The next trend that I am seeing is customers asking about how to integrate standalone switches into a branch router without compromising on security or performance. Recently Ford celebrated the success of the SYNC® system with its 10-Millionth SYNC equipped vehicle. For those who don’t know what the Ford SYNC system is, head over to the Ford Technology page and get yourself educated. What’s important about this milestone is the fact car connectivity has reached critical mass.  This milestone really is a building block that will pave the way for a fully connected vehicle experience with IOE (Internet of Everything).  Doug VanDagens, global director of connected services solutions for Ford Motor Company is quoted by saying “It’s our goal to turn the connected vehicle into an intelligent vehicle.”  Let’s imagine for a minute the possibilities.

Drive To Work

You leave the house for work, get into your vehicle and turn it on.  Immediately your NEST thermostat knows you are leaving the house and turns your thermostat to “Away” mode. As you’re driving to work your vehicle reroutes you automatically as there is an accident 5 KM ahead.  While on your re-routed course you come across a Tim Horton’s and know you just gotta grab a Double-Double coffee.  Continue reading “Driving to work in Internet of Everything”

Out with the old and in with the new and honestly I couldn’t be happier with the new that’s coming in. What is the new that I’m talking about? The Nexus 1000V REST API of course.

I just finished writing scripts to manage (create, modify, delete) vlans and port-profiles on a Nexus 1000V using expect. The scripts work fine, I’m using PowerShell as the main script and it calls out to expect and ssh running in a Cygwin environment, however it would be nice to use the REST API, and do everything from PowerShell or the language of your choice.

The customer I did the work for has multiple 1000V deployments and wanted to automate some aspects of the 1000V administration. Vlan provisioning and port-profile creation seemed to be obvious choices.

Partner-Weekly-Rewind-v2Each week, we’ll highlight the most important Cisco partner news and stories, as well as point you to important, Cisco-related partner content you may have missed along the way. Here’s what you might have missed this week:

Off the Top

Richard McLeod stopped by the Channels Blog this week and dared partners to be bold in collaboration. Coming off a fabulously successful Collaboration Summit, Richard reiterated his mantra of “dare to be bold” around four key imperatives.

If you attended Collaboration Summit, check out Richard’s follow up blog and reinforce the lessons from the event. Even if you didn’t attend Collaboration Summit, Richard’s blog is a great place to catch up on what you might have missed. Continue reading “Cisco Partner Weekly Rewind – November 27, 2013”

In the blink of an eye, a Hotspot 2.0 industry milestone was achieved last week.  Cisco joined with China Mobile and 15 other operators to provide a Next Generation Hotspot (NGH) Experience to over 400 attendees at the WBA Wi-Fi Global Congress in Beijing.

I recently had the honor to speak at the Wi-Fi Global Congress in Beijing. As evident by the more than 400 people in attendance, the importance and relevance of Wi-Fi continues to grow.  The Wireless Broadband Alliance now has over 100 members, a doubling in less than 2 years.  The membership includes a mix of leading Wi-Fi, mobile, and broadband network operators; global service providers and media players; as well as technology providers and partners.

I took away six key messages from this exciting conference:

  1. Next Generation Hotspots is Alive and Well.  One of the most exciting things at the conference was the launch of the live NGH Experience with China Mobile as the host operator and Cisco as the network infrastructure provider.  Attendees with a Samsung Galaxy or iPhone 5 could experience the first ever opportunity to seamlessly and automatically connect to the venue Wi-Fi.  Participants also received valuable conference information and services seamlessly delivered to their mobile device through NGH.  This is just the beginning.  With 15 major carriers (and growing) signed up to deploy NGH, mobile users throughout the world will be able to experience the next generation of Wi-Fi early in 2014.
  2.  Wi-Fi Roaming is Becoming a Reality.  Several speakers described roaming as being where cellular roaming was 15 to 20 years ago.  However, with the successful launch and upcoming deployment of NGH, seamless roaming amongst carriers is now becoming a reality.  Indeed, the GSM Association recently approved a Wi-Fi Roaming Annex that will make it easy for mobile operators to support this.  As such, the WBA expects roaming to be fully automated across more than 80% of public Wi-Fi networks by 2018.
  3.  Wi-Fi is an Important Part of the Mobile Network.  The world’s largest mobile operator, Continue reading “The Next Generation of Wi-Fi Debuts in Beijing”

What would an “Internet of Everything” weekend look like was my question earlier this month as I sat there eating breakfast before going into battle later that day. Today’s meal was critical fuel for my next round of matches in a Masters Squash Tournament. The pressure was on because members of my family were coming to watch me later that day and winning was the only option!

Fiat Cockpit, herbert

I turned back to my breakfast and the environment around me and noticed that the people in the Bistro virtually all had smartphones. Their devices were either in use or sitting on the table as if they were part of the place setting right beside the eating utensils. I looked down at my smartphone and the black screen and began to think differently about what the phone could and should do that would change my weekend experience.
