As Global Industry Director for Manufacturing at Cisco, Chet Namboodri is looking forward to joining you and more than 20,000 of your colleagues at our 2013 Cisco Live event in Orlando, Florida, during June 23-27.

As part of this year’s Cisco Live on Tuesday afternoon, June 25, I’ll be hosting a one hour break-out session (number BRKIND-1229) titled “Cisco Industrial Solutions and Best Practices for Manufacturing”. This session is for manufacturers, their suppliers and their partners who are looking for transparent integration and secure real-time visibility between business networks with control and automation systems—and want to find out the business value that will give them.

In that session I’ll be talking about how you can unify the different kinds of networks – those that utilize information technologies, or IT and those that utilize operational technology, or OT. Just think of the ease of management, support and expansion with an open-standards based architecture that not only reduces total cost of ownership (TCO), but is already providing Cisco customers with real business returns. I’ll talk more about that and give you customer names and use cases at Cisco Live.

TP DemoOne of the key ways Cisco can help you get there is with  “Cisco Smart Solutions,” which provide the open-standard, IP-based communication and control I mentioned to reduce costs, improve up-time, increase asset utilization, and lock-down on end-to-end security.  During the session, I’ll not only talk about case studies, but even have a live  business demonstration over TelePresence to showcase different business capabilities and value achieved with these converged IT/OT solutions. On June 20th, Cisco and MapR will join with Forrester Research Big Data analyst Mike Gualtieri to discuss “productionizing” Hadoop. But what does it mean?

Mike has developed a list of 7 architectural best practices that will help your enterprise quickly, and easily develop or move your Hadoop environment into standard data center processes. Following his guidelines, your can get your Hadoop environment up and running in no time, saving time by being proactive on the headaches and pitfalls that are unique to Big Data environments.

Joining Mike will be MapR CMO, Jack Norris discussing their best practices and how they line up with the Big 7 from Forrester.

Finally, Cisco IT will showcase a MapR production environment and how they have streamlined the complex Big Data workloads, automatically moving data into and running analytics out of their Hadoop environment.

Keeping the Hadoop production environment up and running smoothly is the name of the game here and in the face of resource constraints, Cisco IT has standardized on Cisco Tidal Enterprise Scheduler—with its seamless integrations into MapR, Hive, and Sqoop—giving your enterprise the ability to “productionize” complex workloads from any data source.

Cisco Workload Automation

Join us as we walk you through the 7 architectural best practices for Big Data, MapR and Cisco Tidal Enterprise Scheduler.

For one week this last March, hundreds of thousands of workers from around the world made the commitment to telework. This year’s Telework Week resulted in a 91 percent increase in involvement in 2011, with more than 130,000 total pledges! These record numbers really show the momentum of telework in both the public and private sector. And speaking of public sector – 82 percent of this year’s pledges came from federal employees.

One agency in particular saw resounding success from the initiative – the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). FEMA’s goal to prepare for and respond fast to natural disasters and mobilize massive resources as needed makes it vital for the agency to be mobile. So FEMA has embraced an expansive mobility initiative including an increased focus on telework. During this year’s Telework Week, 3,300 of FEMA’s 5,500 full-time employees logged more than 46,000 hours of telework. Continue reading “Telework Gives FEMA a Helping Hand”

One noted economist believes “the real impact of the electronic revolutions has already occurred.”  We could not disagree more. With over 2B more people and 37B more things planning to join the Internet by 2020, our economic analysis identifies a potential “value at stake” of $14.4 trillion. This number equates to the impact of increased connectedness that the Internet of Everything (IOE) will make possible for private-sector firms over the next decade.  What does that mean?  A potential 21% aggregate increase in profits for the global private sector between 2013 and 2022.

Every day Cisco works with customers to address their technology opportunities and challenges as they focus on driving growth, improving customer experiences and increasing their productivity.  But it’s not just the technology that is driving the benefit to their business – corresponding shifts in strategy around people and information management is driving the gap between the leaders and the followers. In 2013 alone, over $600B in profits are flowing to some of those leaders as they take advantage of the Internet of Everything  – the intelligent connection of people, processes, data and things

It’s not just our technologies that help customers achieve amazing things in their organization,. With our role as architects for our customers IT strategy, we also have a window on how they use everyone else’s technology.  We see, first hand, what happens when they connect the unconnected  – both people and things – and how these connections generate more data and require new processes as “everything” comes online. We wanted to better understand how the Internet of Everything can help businesses create economic value and how to design a roadmap to take advantage of the increased connectedness.

Today, we’re releasing the results of the Cisco IoE Value Index that begins to tackle these questions.  This index is a global survey of 7,500 business and IT decision makers providing a sense of how well businesses worldwide are doing in their efforts to realize their share of the value at stake in 2013. We surveyed executives from large and midsize firms across nine different industries in 12 of the world’s largest economies, which together represent approximately 70% of global GDP.

How much value are we talking about here? From a business perspective, the results of the IoE Value Index tell us that private firms will capture a staggering $613 billion in profits in 2013.  How?  By taking advantage of Internet of Everything to increase efficiencies and create better customer experiences.  Some highlights to note:

Are you thinking about the evolving threat landscape? You should be. Each day, new vulnerabilities are found and new exploits are crafted. Attackers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, while industry trends such as cloud computing and mobility are rapidly expanding the attack surfaces. Your mobile device could act like a Trojan horse, passing right through your network perimeter. Or your compromised server could spread an infection to your most sensitive assets.

This is the first in a series of blog posts that focuses on how Cisco stays ahead of the latest security threats. Of course, to stay on top of something as fast changing and widespread as security threats, you need to understand them in great detail.

And that’s what the Cisco 2013 Annual Security Report (ASR) and Cisco Security Intelligence Operations (SIO) offer. Continue reading “Standing Up to Threats: The Cisco 2013 Annual Security Report & Security Intelligence Operations [Infographic]”

Like many of you I have spent the past week or so getting caught up with work and office goings on after a very successful and informative Microsoft Tech Ed North America 2013 event in New Orleans. At Cisco, our Microsoft team is already ramped up for next week’s Microsoft Tech Ed Europe event and then we go at it once again in Houston at Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference.  At each of these events Cisco is a Gold Sponsor and we will be showcasing our award winning Microsoft datacenter oriented products and solutions: UCS, Nexus, FlexPod, and VSPEX. Stop by our booths and grab one of our 2013 Microsoft Event Tour t-shirts!

Over the past 3 years we’ve had quite a run of good luck at Microsoft Tech Ed winning “Best of Tech Ed” awards in 2011, 2012, and 2013! Frankly this is due to the consistent, ongoing industry-leading innovation that Cisco’s R&D teams in our Datacenter Group are delivering to the market place. In 2011 our Cisco UCS B250 series server family was recognized with a Best of Tech Ed award. In 2012 UCS Manager was awarded the Breakthrough Technology Award at Tech Ed. Finally, just recently for 2013, our Nexus 1000V software switch for Hyper-V and our FlexPod with Microsoft Private Cloud solution won Best of Tech Ed accolades.

This innovation stream from Cisco has prepared us for the I.T. demands that we are all facing today – how to move to a more agile and efficient I.T. technology base as well as driving maximum budgetary efficiencies in OpEx and CapEx . Our Cisco Microsoft solutions are available today and can assist your organizations as they move to a Microsoft private cloud infrastructure and help you achieve positive ROI and TCO advantages.

Here’s a listing of our recent Tech Ed North America blogs – feel free to peruse them and learn more about our compute, network, storage, and architecture solutions for all things Microsoft:
