The North American International Auto Show 2012: How the Automotive Industry is Embracing Social Media

January 26, 2012 at 1:36 pm PST

As a Michigan native, I was raised in a state well known for one industry in particular: Automotive. This past week, the automotive industry was placed on spotlight at the 2012 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, featuring the latest innovations in automotive designs, engines, interior options, and more. This year’s attendance to the 9-day show topped 800,000, with the largest opening day crowd since 2005! Historically, this industry has utilized traditional forms of communication to harness attraction from the public. However, trends are showing how this industry is embracing social media to broaden its outreach.

Collaborating directly with Eric Hoppe, a Social Media Analyst in Michigan who works specifically on automotive campaigns, we explored emerging social media trends at this year’s auto show. Through photos and insights collected live from the Auto Show floor, we exchanged exciting dialogues about how social media is positively impacting the automotive industry.

*Vertical integration is about applications and network working together end-to-end across the network to deliver intelligent services. …One example of medianet vertical integration is the WebEx integration with Media Services Interface (MSI).

*Horizontal integration is about providing services that run across the infrastructure in order to deliver a consistent experience. …One example of medianet horizontal integration includes the Cisco Media Transformation Services.

Retail’s BIG Show Indeed!

The National Retail Federation’s BIG show had another record-breaking year receiving over 25,500 attendees from 78 countries. With over 100 educational sessions and a jam-packed EXPO floor, energy was high.

The innovative demos in the Cisco booth attracted a great deal of traffic offering retailers new ways to generate revenue, create a consistent user experience across all channels, and maximize operational efficiency.

Cisco Interactive Services was very popular. This demo, developed by Cisco and partner Array Interactive, delivered interactive applications allowing attendees to build a wardrobe of outfits, receive fashion advice, and through video collaboration capabilities, connect with a live fashion expert on-demand.

The StyleMe virtual fashion mirror also received great interest as retailers “tried-on” their outfits of choice using gesture-based navigation to make their selection from the inventory of clothing. Attendees could even capture images of themselves in their new outfits to share over social media and email.  Read More »

January 26, 2012 at 10:17 am PST

Announcing the Cisco Manufaturing & Energy Facebook page!

Today we officially launch our Facebook page for Cisco Manufacturing & Energy.

We are launching this page for two main reasons:

First, we are expanding our blog platform and team. In addition to our original manufacturing industry team, we are adding thought leaders and experts from Cisco’s oil, gas, and energy teams.

Second, Facebook, as a social networking platform, is an excellent forum for discussion. It gives all users a simple environment in which to exchange ideas, articles, and opinions. It is where you will find videos, blogs, pictures and many other things related to the manufacturing, oil, gas, and energy industries.  It is also a place where new contacts and relationships can be made, so be sure to get involved and engaged!
