It’s a Small (Cell) World After All

To borrow from Walt Disney, it’s a small (cell) world after all . . .

Not only was this Cisco’s message at Mobile World Congress 2012 but, in the weeks since, the mobile industry has been singing the same refrain.  The media, analysts, our partners, customers and competitors have enthusiastically joined the chorus, acknowledging that the post-macrocell era is upon us.

As Cisco Chairman and CEO John Chambers has said, “radio type no longer defines the network architecture — and small cells are critical in delivering the mobile Internet.” To be competitive, mobile operators must support heterogeneous network access including licensed and unlicensed (Wi-Fi) radio, have an intelligent core and offer cloud-based services that deliver more applications faster in a scalable, flexible and resilient environment.

High Energy This Year at Enterprise Connect

It’s that time of year again. Spring in Orlando where the industry will gather for Enterprise Connect, and the Cisco team will be there in full force.

So get ready for a whole new set of statistics demonstrating the health of our industry and the pace of change in the post-PC era. For example:

  • Between 2011 and 2016, mobile data traffic is expected to increase 1800%
  • Video traffic is expected to make up 70% of that mobile data in 2016 and more than 90% of network traffic
  • Cloud services, which are being accelerated by the adoption of tablets and smartphones, will drive a second wave of IT consumerization.  Software as a service, which is already disrupting more than 25% of the enterprise application space, will go on to change the way we collaborate globally

At Enterprise Connect, we at Cisco want to hear how these changes are affecting your businesses today – and how you are planning for tomorrow. Video, cloud collaboration services, mobility, and customer collaboration are some of the themes we look forward to discussing.

I hope you will make time to see my colleague, OJ Winge, deliver the Cisco keynote on March 27th at 10am Eastern time (7am Pacific). You can also watch it live on nojitter.com.

Collaboration is Hot … A Report from Cisco Live Melbourne

G’Day from Down Under, coming to you from Cisco Live at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre overlooking the Yarra River.  And what a whirlwind three days it has been – quite active and very busy. And according to customers, it has been “crackin’.” It has been a truly fun experience sharing Cisco’s collaboration story which includes the four pillars (social, mobile, virtual and visual) with Australian customers, executives, analysts and news media. In particular, there has been lots of excitement about BYOD and virtualization – both desktop and content virtualization. Read More »

BYOD for Manufacturing – not what you think!

So you think you know what BYOD is? Think again!

Cisco Cius - Not BYOD since it's Corporate provisioned.

If you’re a manufacturer you’ve probably heard of BYOD, or ‘Bring Your Own Device’.  You know that more and more devices are proliferating throughout the organization. You also know that security is a big issue: How do you stop folks accessing sensitive systems, how do you protect Intellectual Property, and how do you prevent a disastrous shutdown caused by a device either intentionally or unintentionally?

Well, these are only some of the issues – and they’re rarely addressed by a ‘Good-Enough Network’. Cisco’s BYOD is different – it looks at the whole picture. It’s not just about your wireless network – although the Cisco offerings are better than most! It’s about an holistic approach to BYOD. That covers the plant, IT, the LAN and fixed wired network and the wireless network too. All aspects.

As my colleague, Katie Taylor, says in her blog: Read More »

Cisco’s “Connected Life Exchange” Blog Honored by BtoB for its Storytelling Techniques

The Connected Life Exchange (CLE) Blog is not just another Cisco blog that talks about the company’s products and services. It’s a collection of stories, including a new documentary series, “The Network Effect,” that illustrates how service provider innovation of the “largest and most reliable machine on the planet”—the telecom network—drives economic development and improves quality of life, especially in developing regions.

A little more than a year old, this blog has one of the best visitor retention rates of all Cisco corporate blogs (as measured by ‘bounce rate,’ and ‘time on site’).  On March 20th, BtoB Magazine recognized the Connected Life Exchange at the Social Media Marketing Awards, remarking:

“The whole package is refreshingly non-promotional and often fascinating. Cisco continues to innovate in the suddenly red-hot field of content marketing with an approach to thought leadership that emphasizes actual thinking.”

Watch this video highlighting The Network Effect to get a little taste of what this award-winning blog is all about:

So what’s the back story on CLE? Read More »
