Many Big Data related innovations have been developed by Web 2.0 companies, resulting in a growing collection of open source technologies that dramatically change the culture of collaborative software development and the scale and economics of hardware infrastructure. These technologies enable data storage, management and analysis in ways that were not possible before with traditional technologies such as relational database management systems, in a cost-effective manner.
NoSQL is one such technology that has emerged as an increasingly important part of big data trends for applications that demand large volumes of simple reads and updates against very large datasets (Hadoop is the other innovation, a generic processing framework designed to execute “read only” queries and batch jobs against massive datasets). NoSQL is often characterized by what it is not, and definitions vary. It can be Not Only SQL-based or simply Not a SQL-based relational database management system. NoSQL databases form a broad class of non-relational database management systems that are evolving rapidly, and several solutions are emerging with highly variable feature sets and few standards.
While these technologies are attractive from the standpoint of the innovations they can bring, not all products meet enterprise requirements. Many organizations require robust, commercially supported solutions for rapid deployments and the ability to integrate such solutions in to existing enterprise applications infrastructure.

It’s been a great week for AT&T at the IP&TV World Forum, and by proxy, a great week for Cisco!
In case you hadn’t heard the word from “over the pond,” the IP&TV World Forum recognized AT&T with not one, but TWO accolades: Best TV App, for its U-verse for Tablet, and “Best Consumer Device,” for the U-Verse TV Wireless Receiver (built by guess who!)
The IP&TV Industry Awards, which occurred in London on the evening of March 21, honor service providers for their innovation, excellence, and achievement in the IPTV sector.
The AT&T Wireless Receiver, which launched across U-verse markets last October, is an IPTV set-top equipped with video-optimized Wi-Fi. From a consumer perspective, it means hanging the TV set anywhere, and not necessarily near a coaxial wall outlet — a no-wires way to arrange the TV to go with people’s lives, furniture, and living environments.
In Cisco-speak, we call this fabulous device the ISB7005 wireless DVR set-top, coupled with our VEN401 wireless access point. The former is a set-top that can go anywhere in the house; the latter is the video-optimized wireless access point.

During a recent Desktop Virtualization Webcast titled VDI with Unified Communications: What Architects Need to Know, one of the key takeaways was that Unified Communications (UC) and Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) teams need to work together and look at the larger user environment in which they are delivering the IT services. When the audience was asked how many of them were collaborating with their UC teams, 53% said they were currently engaging with their organization’s UC teams in their desktop virtualization projects.
Of course, this may be a biased sample, since the survey is of the webcast attendees, which mainly include IT professionals who are interested in the intersection of VDI and UC. However, I believe this is a sign of a growing trend in enterprise IT.
The Cisco Systems facility in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina hosted North Carolina Governor Beverly Perdue Wednesday, March 21 as she called for additional state education funding.
In a speech detailing North Carolina’s success in attracting high technology firms, Perdue said an educated local workforce is “how we became the right location for Cisco – a name brand that’s synonymous with innovation and ambition.” Read More »
