Using Webinars: Great Examples from Those Doing it Well

We found four organizations that are taking full advantage of technology and using webinars to add value to their brand, reach new customers, educate their audiences and/or support their current staff.

We hope these folks offer inspiration as you plan your next event.

The eLearning Guild

This is a member-driven organization of e-learning professionals that use webinars for showcasing the latest ideas from a range of expert speakers. Their hour-long webinars teach new techniques and strategies. The monthly events are recorded so users can view them at their leisure. For example, on January 17, 2012, “The Secrets to Rapid eLearning Success” dealt with keeping up with the latest technological demands and producing effective e-learning.

VizThink

An online community interested in the process or the ability to engage people in understanding ideas, not the final product, uses webinars to educated people about visual thinking and about other topics, like “Journalism in the Age of Data.” They have set up a nice page with easy access to their series of webinars that are free to the public. This is a great way to help people find your library and see what you have to offer.

PetSmart Charities

An independent, nonprofit, PetSmart Charities uses online webinars to train volunteers and staff working to help animals. They have programs that save the lives of homeless pets, raise awareness of companion animal welfare issues and promote healthy relationships between people and pets. Read More »

London 2012 – Leaving a Lasting Legacy for Science and Math

On Monday morning, I was at Claremont High School, in Harrow, London, watching as one of the architects responsible for building the Olympic stadium kept a class of 13 year olds enthralled about the design and engineering challenges involved.

Jo Smith from the firm Buro Happold was taking a lesson from Cisco’s  Out of the Blocks StemNet programme bringing real world examples of how lessons about chemical structure; mathematics and physics were all very much challenges the stadium designers and builders has to overcome when designing the stadium and other venues for this summer’s Olympics.

Challenges facing retailers in the omnichannel world

My colleagues Jon Stine and Lisa Fretwell with Cisco IBSG recently published research about consumers that are constantly channel hopping in their shopping journey.  We all have personal experiences shopping on the web, in the store and on mobile devices.

I recently in the middle of a conversation during lunch, made a reservation on Open Table app, purchased a case for my phone on amazon app and bought a music album on iTunes  (Doctor Who Series 6), and pulled up directions to the local home improvement store, all in 10 minutes.  Obviously the consumer trend is shopping across multiple channels, and some retailers are succeeding in this new world, and some are not.

I sat down with Brian Kilcourse, managing partner of Retail Systems Research and this was one of the topics we talked about.

Some of the areas we discussed are:

Cisco Announces Intent to Acquire ClearAccess

Today, Cisco announced its intent to acquire privately held ClearAccess. ClearAccess provides TR-069 standards-based, cloud, and onsite management software for residential and mobile devices. This acquisition is yet another example of Cisco’s commitment to help service providers improve customer experiences by enhancing their ability to manage mobile and cloud-based services, including video entertainment.

Service providers are faced with growing network complexity, massive amounts of data, and increasing numbers of devices on their networks—many of them in the home. Together, Cisco and ClearAccess will enable service providers to more effectively deliver value to end users by improving the delivery of video, data, voice, rich content, and other services into an increasingly complex residential environment. ClearAccess helps to complete Cisco’s end-to-end management solutions for service providers, extending from the core of the network all the way into the connected home.

As we continue to use all of Cisco’s tools to drive innovation, acquisitions such as ClearAccess will help bring top talent, new technology, and business models into Cisco. M&A remains a key part of our build, buy, and partner innovation framework and supports our strategy of providing best-in-class solutions for our customers. The ClearAccess acquisition is well-aligned to our strategic goals of building software platforms and driving business and technology architectures. I am very excited to welcome the world-class team from ClearAccess to the Cisco family.

Understanding the Difference Between Wireless Encryption Protocols

The WPA data encryption protocol you choose depends on your wireless network’s needs

It’s critically important to secure your wireless networks, but security can be complex, particularly when it comes to configuring each network component appropriately. A smart place to start is with the wireless router, which connects your local area network (LAN) to the Internet. Routers allow you to encrypt data as it travels in and out of your network, making it much more difficult to be read or altered by hackers trying to steal confidential information. Most small business routers let you choose which data encryption protocol you want to use, but in order to make the best choice for your network, you need to understand the differences between encryption protocols.
