Tips and Tricks: 9 tips for a Smarter Wireless Industrial Workforce

March 30, 2012 at 4:39 pm PST

Nine tips help enable an industrial wireless mobile workforce, including standards, self-healing technologies, and the right blend of hardware and software.

The latest copy of Control Engineering has some useful Tips and Tricks that point towards the kinds of solutions and offerings Cisco provides, to make our customer’s lives easier. In a later post I’ll elucidate on the tips and explain how Cisco is able to make for a Smarter Wireless Industrial Workforce. For now, here are the tips:

#1) Standards-based solutions: Ensure suppliers provide open standards based solutions—this is particularly important when choosing wireless mobility systems.

#2) Self-healing wireless: System integrators can provide good interference detection and mitigation wireless solutions that can automatically change channels to maintain continuity, which reduces operating expenses.

#3) Hardware vs. software: It is better to use wireless systems with specialized hardware and software implementation rather than the older software implementations when analyzing interference. Read More »

The Evolving Video Landscape

As we approach the start of NAB 2012, I am struck by how much has changed in a year. What was vision 12 months ago is reality today. TV Everywhere is reaching the mainstream and consumer demand on continues to grow at a breathtaking place.  Media companies and service providers who are enabling this transition are wrestling with questions about how to manage, monetize, secure, process, and deliver quality experiences.

Amidst the growth some underlying trends reveal current consumer preferences -  compiling information from more than 10 billion video views shows that 60 percent of mobile videos consumed are done using an iPhone and iPod, while the iPad alone accounted for 20 percent of video consumption.  Add it all together and 80 percent of all mobile video is viewed using an iOS device. Keep in mind the iPad was first released in 2010!  We believe the multiple device phenomenon will diversify -- the number tells the tale.

March Madness: physical security and virtualization are HOT!

Physical security has March Madness. And you might get it too, if you manage Cisco UCS and run video surveillance applications. Or if you attended ISC West this week in Vegas, where virtualization was all the buzz.

Our hot news is the virtualization of video surveillance on Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS). This has potentially profound implications on two big operational costs: data center management and safety and security operations.

The Rise of Cisco UCS and the Cisco Services Data Center Transformation Experience

March 30, 2012 at 11:14 am PST

March 2009 was an exciting time for both for Cisco and for me personally.  Cisco launched the revolutionary Unified Computing System, with many observers across the industry doubting if we’d stay the course (and if we’re honest, some truly misplaced derision -- I wonder who is on Planet Zircon now!).  And I joined the Cisco Data Center Services team from the Cisco R&D organization!  So with the recent third generation launch of Cisco UCS, described very well by my colleague Todd Brannon, I thought it would be a good time to reflect on our data center services portfolio around that time, and where we are now.  My previous blogs chronicle part of this journey, however I have to say, the direct comparison I draw here I personally think shows that we have indeed brought a new transformational experience to the data center for our customers. And I’d like to give you my personal recollections on how and what I found out about Cisco’s approach to shaking the incumbents’ lack of innovation in the blade server market.

March 30, 2012 at 10:37 am PST

Next week, the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) will be hosting the 2012 Department of Defense Intelligence Information Systems (DoDIIS) Worldwide Conference in Denver, Colorado.

Since Cisco TelePresence is helping government organizations around the world connect visually from anywhere at any time, it’s only natural we are attending one of the leading government conferences.

In booth #801, experts at Cisco will be demonstrating a number of its innovative telepresence technologies including:

  • The Cisco TelePresence SX20 Quick Set is a flexible solution that helps you easily turn any flat panel display into a powerful telepresence system for small to medium-size meeting rooms. The SX20 Quick Set delivers high-definition video quality, multi-party conferencing, and three different camera options to accommodate room size and configurations.  At a value price, the SX20 Quick Set provides the performance expected of more expensive systems, in a sleek, compact, multi-featured package.
  • The Cisco TelePresence System EX Series transforms the workplace by combining work, communications, and collaboration -- all on the desktop with just the touch of a finger.  Colleagues can instantly work together, whether they are separated by a hallway, a street, or several time zones. As part of the EX Series, the Cisco TelePresence System EX90 (EX90) and Cisco TelePresence System EX60 (EX60) support vivid, lifelike 1080p30 video, natural collaboration, and the simplicity of a touch screen interface for a complete solution that helps ensure conversations are more productive.
  • Cisco Cius is a tablet purpose-built for business and delivers end-to-end security, manageability, collaboration features and mobility for today’s workforce.
  • Jabber is a unified communications application that allows people to be more productive from anywhere by providing a single interface across presence, instant messaging (IM), voice, video, voice messaging, desktop sharing and conferencing.
