Cisco’s Day One for SAP Sapphire/TechEd Madrid

Day one was a successful day for Cisco at SAP TechEd Madrid. Our booth was full most of the day with customers looking and discussing the solutions in our booth.

We had a FlexPod and VBlock rack in our both which attracted quite a lot of attention. We were able to explain both of these solutions to those who came by the booth. We also spent quite a bit of time talking about ITPA and how that solution enhances Cisco’s UCS server platform for SAP HANA and how this differentiates Cisco from the remaining certified hardware vendors for SAP HANA.

Cisco UCS is also represented in the SAP HANA Test drive area, where SAP is demonstrating application development on a Cisco UCS C460 platform for SAP HANA.

Michael Missbach, who manages Cisco’s SAP competency center in Walldorf Germany, was the leader in two Microforums on Tuesday. The first was SAP on the Cloud and the second was a Microforum with TUI Travel’s (HotelBeds) CIO Mr. Garcia. He was able to discuss his installation of SAP on Cisco UCS as well as his use of SAP HANA on Cisco UCS and how this architecture design saves him approximately 150,000 Euros a year. Read the story here

There were also meetings with Portugal Telecom, Almaviva, and Korea Telecom during the day, all of which were very productive

Besides the customer meetings, there were numerous meetings with different partners during the day

Cisco hosted the Vblock party in our booth late in the day, which attracted a big crowd culminating with the entire crowd chanting “Cisco sells Servers” which could be heard through the exhibit hall.

Overall we had over 200 visitors to our booth.

Overall, a very successful day for Cisco

Education is changing. All around the world schools, colleges and universities are seeking new approaches to teaching that overcome longstanding barriers to learning. Innovative education leaders are using new technologies to expand access to education, increase student engagement and improve student outcomes.

The Mooresville Graded School District, one of the lowest funded districts in North Carolina, implemented a district-wide digital conversion and now ranks 2nd in the state in overall student achievement. Similar results are being realized across the public sector as government and healthcare leaders also seek new approaches to citizen services and healthcare delivery.

At Cisco, we are working to make it easier for educators, government officials and health care professionals to “be there” – to teach, to serve, to heal.

Once upon a time – one not so long ago – mobile devices were primarily used by upper-level executives.   That model is now turned on its head, as mobile devices seem as common among employees as shoes and socks.

Smartphones, tablets, and new hybrid devices provide access to critical information and improve the way business gets done.  A staggering amount of data is being generated by smartphones, tablets, and other connected devices. The Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI) predicts that global mobile data traffic will increase 18-fold from 2011 to 2016. In addition, the use of Wi-Fi for Internet access is exploding, and  it has increasingly made its way into most businesses. Last week, the annual 4G World show was hosted in everyone’s favorite windy city—Chicago!  This year, I was lucky enough to be a keynote speaker for the event.  It’s always an honor to speak at an event on behalf of Cisco and the countless folks that have made our SP Mobility a success.  As the show progressed, I was reminded at how far the world of mobility has come in such a short amount of time.  Moreover, I was amazed at the vast amount of new opportunities that have emerged as a result this rapidly evolving market.  I am extremely excited about what the next year will bring!

Aside from the keynote event, I spent the vast majority of my time in meetings with new and existing service provider customers.  The conversations were Continue reading “From Coverage and Capacity to Monetizing New Services for Service Providers”

President Barack Obama has been reelected as the 44th president of the United States. And while he may still be holding on to his treasured Blackberry, most of us are more interested in what technology trends he and his administration will pursue to make public sector agencies smarter, faster and more efficient.

Throughout Obama’s first term he made significant headway with data center consolidation, cloud computing, information transparency and cybersecurity, and it seems like he’ll be keeping tech initiatives on his agenda.

To solidify his commitment to furthering technology, Obama made mention of it in his victory speech:

“But despite all our differences, most of us share certain hopes for America’s future; we want our kids to grow up in a country where they access to the best schools and the best teachers. A country that lives up to its legacy as the global leader in technology and discovery and innovation. With all the new jobs and new businesses that follow.”

So looking at Obama’s track record and guarantees, what should the public sector have its eyes on? Take a look at the four technology trends identified by many as likely second-term priorities: Continue reading “With Second Term Ahead – What Tech Initiatives Matter Most for Government Agencies in 2013”

Cloud-based computing is being viewed by schools, colleges and universities as an increasingly attractive option for delivering education services more securely, reliably, and economically.

Cisco cloud customer, Electronic Testing Services (ETS), took part in a joint webcast to discuss the economic advantages of cloud computing. If you weren’t aware, ETS hosts the advanced placement exam for students. Their previous infrastructure saw low utilization rates due to once-per-year exams. By using Cisco cloud computing, ETS now sees revenues more closely matching expenses.

Universities are embracing cloud computing services models for research, student engagement, and cross-university collaboration but struggle to determine the best way to use these services given high security concerns. As a result, there has been a strong interest and investment in private cloud solutions and interest in community clouds specific to the higher education sector.

Forrester Consulting, on behalf of Cisco, recently investigated the degree of cloud adoption by 12 universities in the US, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and India, primarily around learning, collaboration, research and administration.

What cloud technologies are being used — private, public, hybrid, or community — and what drove Universities to cloud? What benefits did Universities receive from the cloud and the challenges they faced. Also, what were the IT leaders’ evaluation of the vendor(s) they used and the kind of services vendors could provide?
