The TechWiseTV Fundamentals series continues to enjoy a great run – this concept of character animation and tight scripting we started with back in the early TrustSec and EnergyWise days, is still a complete joy to work on. We have learned a ton about getting the scripts tighter, writing to support visuals, how to stay technical and not try to say too much AND all the work that goes into storyboarding the visuals, working with artists and motion graphic experts.  There was an element, however, we had never considered before – in my mind perhaps because I thought it was furthest from our capability.

It’s easy to take our connectedness for granted, isn’t it? We often don’t even think about all the innovation behind our connections, but it’s mind boggling when you actually consider just how much getting connected has revolutionized nearly every facet of life over the past two decades. Even more amazing is the fact that we’re just getting started. I like how Mary Meeker, in the most recent installment of her highly anticipated annual “Internet Trends” presentation, described it as still being in “spring training.”

It took us more than 20 years to get two billion people on the Internet, but estimates suggest the next two billion will connect to the network in less than half that time. And the growth of connected “things” is even more incredible. Sometime around 2009, the number of things connected to the Internet surpassed the number of connected people, at which point we began to experience what some call the “Internet of Things.”

Here is something fun you can do today with your smart phone or tablet. It’s an app that brings the Internet of Things alive from a newspaper or screen.

How to get it:

1. First, go grab a copy of today’s global Wall Street Journal and find the Cisco TOMORROW Starts Here ad, which is in the center of section A. ( From your computer, you can also print or view a copy of the ad.)

2. Download the Cisco app (available for iPhone, iPad and Android) from Cisco.com/app or from the Apple App Store or Google Play.

3. Start the app and touch the Wake up an Ad icon.

4. Press Start to wake up the ad.

(Again, if you don’t have the actual ad you can also print or view on the screen a copy of the ad from your computer.)

5. Point your phone or tablet at the ad

6. Choose “Newspaper Spread” when the translucent overlay appears.

7. Enjoy playing with the interactive experience!

We’ve gotten some fun comments from Cisco employees during the testing, including these two:

SO cool! My kids actually watched the videos with me (ages 5-1/2 and 4); their verdict: “OOOH, look — the people are MOVING!!!”

Wow! It’s just like Hogwarts!”

Enjoy!

As part of our ongoing support of the Australian and New Zealand partner community, last week we hosted the second annual Cisco Marketing Excellence partner awards. These awards are designed to recognise the great work that our partners are doing in creating and promoting innovative Cisco campaigns.

The awards are given across both the partner and distributor categories as well as recognising a partner in the Premier/Silver category which is a new award this year.

I am pleased to announce the following partners as this year’s winners:

James Mackay from Express Data is the winner of the distributor category for developing creative marketing around the Cisco Front Row program. Gabrielle Kingston from Westcon was the runner up thanks to her innovative promotion of Cisco UCS.

In the partner category Logicalis’ Oliver Descoeudres was the winner for developing an integrated program promoting “Tomorrow’s Workplace”. The runner-up was Garrett MacDonald who created a cloud campaign for Data#3 featuring Cisco’s “Know the network” as a call to action.

For the new Premier/Silver partner category, Blair Burchill from Comscentre was judged the winner for a customer briefing he conducted with Cisco and a leading public sector customer.

Over the last several months, since Cisco announced its Open Network Environment strategy, there has been considerable progress on multiple fronts:

– Early field trials (EFTs) with several Enterprise and Service Provider customers

– Proof-of-concepts (PoCs) and customer feedback providing more insight into use-cases and product evolution

– Several acquisitions have been announced that complement the strategy we outlined

– Our engagement and leadership in all the standards bodies around various aspects of open networking continue to grow

During all of these activities and customer interactions, what stood out was the considerable appetite amongst customers and others to learn about these emerging concepts in a more structured way. They expressed a strong desire to break through some of the hype cycle that has pervaded the industry around some of these topics, causing some degree of confusion. They also asked Cisco to present information in an easily consumable manner.

Given the breadth of our portfolio and the diversity of our customer base,  this was a bit of challenge for us.  A lot of this information was  disbursed across different landing pages, blog sites etc.  So we had to take a fresh approach to accede to this request.

Based on efforts over the last several weeks, the team has built two foundational portals that serve the purpose of both information aggregation as well as hopefully a watering hole for knowledge seekers –

The Cisco ONE Knowledge portal: This is a centralized aggregated information repository of all the content that we are generating around the topic of open networking across the portfolio, whether it is more formal and structured, or more informal and social. The information here is organized in a more structured way, based on type of content and the chronology.

Check this out at www.cisco.com/go/one and click on the “Knowledge Portal” tab.

What you will see is some quality content manifest itself over time, as we bring the consolidated efforts from various Cisco thought leaders, customers, analysts etc. and assets including more demos, deployment use-cases, case-studies etc. We are also initiating a series of webcasts on this topic to do a deeper dive on technology topics with roughly a 4-6 week cadence, with Cisco CTOs across various technology groups mostly leading the sessions.  The intent is to Educate in a more structured manner. For example, we’re kicking off the first of these Cisco ONE webinars with “An Introduction to OpenStack”. (If you have not registered for the webcast yet, please do so).

We sincerely welcome your feedback on how to continue to improve the content as well as experience with the Cisco ONE knowledge portal.

Mobile learning is an important trend in education today. The Mooresville Graded School District (MGSD) is at the forefront of this trend with their successful “Digital Conversion” and 1:1 laptop initiative. MGSD embarked on this journey in 2007. Today, MGSD ranks second in the state in overall student achievement even though it is one of the lowest funded districts in North Carolina.

While much of the discussion around mobile learning centers on new devices, MGSD CTO, Dr. Scott Smith, is quick to highlight the importance of a robust network and wireless infrastructure that supports what teachers and students want to do in the classroom.  In this video, Dr. Smith also discusses the importance of making strategic investments to “future proof” the network for evolving models of teaching and learning.

You can hear first-hand from Dr. Smith on December 11th at 9 am PT/12 pm ET, during this live webinar, Best Practices for a Successful K-12 Wireless Network. Key topics will include:

Over the past year, Cisco has been  increasingly vocal and active around open source solutions .
One of my favorite blogger, Omar Sultan , spent a lot of time writing on the subject , starting with OpenStack (ie blog :OpenStack cisco ONE and you) – You may want to check all his  blogs here
Cisco also has a blog dedicated to this topic “Open at Cisco
Last June   Cisco Shashi Kiran  announced the Cisco ONE (Open Networking Environment)  on Cisco blog, and last week at Gartner DC , both David Yen , SVP & GM Data Center Group , and John Manville SVP Cisco IT Global Infrastructure talk about what Cisco ONE means in terms of solutions and IT platform for us and our customers .

Lew Tucker ,Cisco VP , Chief Technology Officer for Cloud Computing and Vice Chairman OpenStack foundation is obviously one of the force behind the evolution of the data center . Actually Lew was recently recognized as one of the top ten pioneers in the cloud computing emergence by InformationWeek .

For many children, visiting Santa Claus, sitting on his lap, and telling him what they want for Christmas is a highlight of the holiday season. But for a sick, hospitalized child, participating in this tradition can be impossible.

Thanks to Cisco technology and a network of Cisco volunteers, hundreds of hospitalized children in the U.K. and Ireland have a chance to visit with Santa each year – in the most high-tech way possible.

One of eight volunteer Santas in the 2012 Connected Santa program in the U.K. and Ireland

Innovation is often defined as novel technological invention. What is far less known about successful innovation efforts is that it takes a special breed of individual who possesses the rare combination of technical depth and sharp diplomatic skills. To be a successful innovator, one must be able to maneuver through political mine fields inherent with industry level leadership and standards bodies.

Cisco is fortunate to have such individuals who work in our Government Affairs, Compliance, SP Standards and Corporate Consulting Engineering teams and it makes the company a very formidable entity.

Our preparation for the ITU-T CTO meeting, the Global Standards Symposium and the World Telecommunications Standards Assembly, all held in Dubai this November, provide very recent and tangible examples of how Cisco is succeeding in this multi-dimensional world.

It is in such meetings that Continue reading “Cisco Gets a Gold Star for Tech-Policy and Standards Leadership”
